Foundation Supports Playwrighting

Our ongoing representation of the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust is a relationship that goes back more than 20 years. This foundation focuses on promoting theater in the United States, including funding educational programs for schoolchildren in many parts of the country. After many years of operation, the trust decided to create two playwrights’ awards, to be presented in alternating years. The awards are among the largest in the playwrighting world. In recent years, the theater world has suffered from the flight of playwrights to more lucrative careers, primarily screenwriting and television. The new Steinberg Playwrights’ Awards honor mid-career dramatists with a $200,000 prize and two early-career playwrights with a $50,000 prize each. It is the charitable trust’s hope that these awards will inspire playwrights to stay in the field and help provide them with the economic means to do so. The trust was created in the 1980s by our client, Harold Steinberg, in his and his wife’s name, to continue their legacy of supporting culture, particularly the theater, in the United States.
