Institute Funding

SRZ represented The Leon Levy Foundation in structuring a gift to New York University for the establishment of The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World. The Institute, which will be funded by the Foundation with a gift of approximately $200 million, will be a graduate research and Ph.D. degree-granting center with its own faculty and a roster of post-doctoral scholars and research fellows whose study of antiquity will transcend traditional geographic and cultural boundaries. The Institute will be housed in an elegant 100-year-old six-story townhouse located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side that the Foundation purchased in 2004.

The Foundation is named in honor of Leon Levy, a renowned investor who died in 2003. Mr. Levy and his wife, Shelby White, have both devoted substantial time and effort to learning about the ancient world. The Foundation’s decision to create The Institute is a further extension of their interest in this subject and it comes after several years of discussion and evaluation, including consultation with an advisory board of scholars considering ways to advance the understanding of the ancient world and to encourage the next generation of leading scholars.
