Nonprofit
Nonprofit institutions are under more scrutiny today than ever before from the public, legislators and interest groups, among others. Schulte’s Nonprofit Group helps artistic and cultural institutions, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions and privately funded philanthropic entities navigate the many issues they face to enable them to more effectively further their nonprofit objectives.
Working with the firm’s Employment Group, we help nonprofits deal with labor law issues and collective bargaining while adhering to institutional values and mission statements. We also regularly advise on sensitive employment law issues and litigation, as well as employment contracts, including the specialized rules governing executive compensation and benefits. We collaborate with Schulte’s Real Estate and Intellectual Property groups to help nonprofits manage their buildings and their copyrights. And with the firm’s extensive Tax Group, we advise on the complex regulations governing the nonprofit sector and help nonprofits guard against missteps that can threaten their tax-exempt status or result in sanctions.
We also have extensive experience advising nonprofit boards on best practices, fiduciary matters, conflicts of interest, whistleblowing, endowments and other governance matters. Working with Schulte’s Individual Client Services Group—which advises high net worth individuals on their personal philanthropy —we counsel nonprofits on planned giving and relationships and agreements with donors. And we collaborate with the firm’s Litigation Group to help nonprofits manage reputational crises, conduct sensitive internal investigations and trainings, and resolve disputes, whether through negotiation, arbitration or litigation.
