Susan Bernstein Named Chair of IRS Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities
June 7, 2017
Special counsel Susan Bernstein was appointed as Chair of the Internal Revenue Service’s Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities (ACT). The ACT, established in 2001 and governed by the Federal Advisory Committee Act, Public Law 92-463, includes external stakeholders and representatives experienced in employee benefit plans, tax-exempt organizations, tax-exempt bonds, and federal, state, local and Indian tribal governments. Susan is one of 10 members, and she is serving her third year of a three-year term. Based on Susan’s expertise in working with employee benefit plans and not-for-profit organizations, she will lead the ACT’s advisory panel and work with Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division Commissioner Sunita Lough.
“The ACT seeks to provide practical recommendations to the IRS on concerns that face tax-exempt and government entities and at the same time support IRS objectives, which include simplifying processes, eliminating duplication of functions, improving communication and support for taxpayers, and increasing compliance,” Susan said. The Commissioner of the IRS selected Susan through a rigorous application and interview process, and she was appointed by the Department of Treasury. Susan assumed her duties as Chair of the ACT at the public meeting held on June 7, 2017 in Washington, D.C.
